We have a new 3D capable X-ray machine that gives us instant images and reduces a patient's exposure to radiation by up to 90% over traditional machines! A few years ago, the only way to have a 3D X-ray was at the hospital with a cat-scan machine, but now we have that same AWESOME technology right in the office. 3D imaging is truly a marvel for identifying orthodontic problems that are often missed if you were not up-to-date with the current technology.
Wow. Here is something interesting. Have you ever heard of self-ligating braces? a.k.a Damon braces or the infamous "Speed" braces developed in the 1970s? (A car that is 30 years old is considered to be an antique!). You know, these braces are supposed to be faster and more comfortable? Where the manufacturers are spending millions of marketing dollars to promote their products? Now, some specialists echo the manufacturers' claims without ANY RANDOMIZED CLINICAL STUDIES WHATSOEVER! Well, here's the latest from the American Journal of Orthodontics, "several clinical studies have shown that self-ligating" (Damon, etc.) "braces confer none of claimed advantages over conventional braces with regard to speed of alignment of the teeth or increased comfort for the patient. Summary for all orthodontists: Let's not mislead our patients into thinking some braces are faster or more comfortable that others...it is unethical and downright dishonest! Until next time... Dr G
